Hockey players have a reputation for being tough guys on the ice, but those who know them off ice say their tough-guy reputations usually belie their huge hearts.  It’s no different when it comes to the emergency services officers from the Kingston, Duxbury, Marshfield and Pembroke areas.  The Kingston Police Superior Officers Benevolent Association hosts a hockey tournament each year, raising money for worthy causes in the community.  The 2017 5th Kingston Police Hockey Classic will be played April 31 – May 2, 2017 at The Bog Ice Arena in Kingston, Massachusetts.  Organizers are looking now for 16 teams comprised of Police, Fire, EMS, Corrections or Military personnel to compete in the event.

The upcoming competition will be played in memory of Matt Benting, who played in the 2016  Classic with the Brewster Ambulance Team along with his brother, Rob.  Kenneth Matthew Benting, 20 years old, of Pembroke MA, passed away on June 10, 2016, shortly after doing one of his favorite things in life – playing hockey.  An all-around athlete, Matt had finished his sophomore year of college, studying Criminal Justice at Bridgewater State University in order to enhance his dream of becoming a Law Enforcement Officer. He achieved academic status as a member of the Dean’s list and had also participated in an internship at the Norwell Police Department. Matt was a member of the BSU hockey team, and played junior hockey as well as in several men’s hockey leagues.  “He loved hockey, sports and competition,” said Laura Benting, his mom.

Amazed by the support of his friends and the community, Matt’s family decided that they wanted to carry on his love for hockey and his love of wanting to help others. In his memory, Matt’s family created BentingStrong, a scholarship program that awards college scholarships through the Kenneth “Matthew” Benting Memorial Scholarship Fund.  They plan to also build a program that helps provide equipment for kids who want to play hockey but can’t afford it. Matt’s family and friends are also entering a hockey team into the 2017 Classic.

“Each year, the organizations we support with this fundraiser are so incredibly important and worthy of our work and play.  This year, though, we are playing for one of our own.” Said tournament organizer Scott Morgan ” It’s going to be bittersweet and yet so important that we do this for Matt, his family and the BentingStrong organization.   I’m looking forward to the whole weekend!”

Teams interested in competing in the 2017 5th Kingston Police Hockey Classic may pre-register on the event website, www.kingstonpolicehockeyclassic.com. The cost per team to participate is $1100. Each team is guaranteed 3 games over the weekend. The tournament is divided up into two divisions and the top two teams for each division play for their respective division championships on Sunday.

Event planners anticipate other fundraising events will take place in conjunction with the Classic, including an auction.  Look for more information regarding game times and other activities as the event nears.  Then come support our public safety officials as they put it all on the ice for BentingStrong.   Firehouse Hockey will provide continuing coverage of the Kingston Classic as well.
